How to Get to Tarvisio from Austria
(Without Losing Your Mind)
Getting to Tarvisio from Austria sounds simple. It’s only a short stretch south of the border. On the map, it looks effortless — a gentle slide from Kärnten into Italy.
In reality, it requires a little local intelligence.
Here is the honest guide.

By Train — Klimaticket, Stations
& the 5km Reality
Yes, you can take the train from Austria to Tarvisio.
If you hold a Klimaticket, you do not need an additional ticket for the Austrian section of the journey. Depending on your route, the ticket may cover you right to the border station — but always double-check the exact validity zone before boarding.
Now the important part:
The main Austrian-Italian rail stop is Tarvisio Boscoverde.
It is not in the town center.
It is approximately 4–5 kilometers from Tarvisio’s historic center.
What this means:
• If you arrive by train, you will need to walk (around 45–60 minutes).
• Or wait for a bus (which may not align perfectly with arrival times).
• Or pre-book a taxi (recommended in evenings or winter).
There is no charming little “step out of the train into piazza” scenario here.

By Bike — Scenic & Surprisingly Logical
This is the hidden gem.
There is a dedicated cycle path following the former railway line along the river — part of the Alpe Adria cycle route.
From Arnoldstein (Austria) into Tarvisio:
It’s scenic, relatively gentle, and far safer than riding on the main road.
Important:
Do not attempt to cycle directly on the main state road.
Traffic is fast and infrastructure shifts abruptly.
The cycle path leads you much closer to town comfortably.
If you arrive by train and feel energetic:
Walking or biking the 5km from Boscoverde can actually be pleasant in good weather.
Local Transport Gaps (What Nobody Tells You)
Public buses exist.
But:
• Schedules are limited.
• Stations are not always intuitively located.
• Tickets may require an app.
• Data roaming matters.
If you arrive without mobile data and without cash alternatives, it can become complicated quickly.
Advice:
Download relevant apps in advance.
Screenshot timetables.
Do not rely on spontaneous solutions late at night.
Taxi & Evening Reality
Tarvisio is small.
Taxis are available — but not always waiting around the corner.
If you plan:
• A wine-focused dinner
• A DJ night
• An alpine festival evening
Book your taxi in advance.
Especially in winter or during events, but also during the day
Restaurants and wine bars are worth staying for - and many of them offer shuttle-services.
Plan your return before you start the evening.
In many cases, the smartest solution is simple:
Stay overnight!
